ABOUT ME

 Kishann Rai

I am fortunate enough to be enrolled in my last year at Santa Clara. I began my college career as an Environmental Studies major. Growing up in the California countryside, along with having an orchard, I developed a great appreciation for nature and it's beauty. I loved visiting my mom’s family in the beautiful Adirondack mountains, surrounded by birch trees. Nature was apart of my young life, as I hiked through hills, water skiing on lakes, and picked fruit from the family orchard. Playing field hockey and lacrosse only furthered my appreciation for nature as most of my days were spent outside on the field. My appreciation for nature had been present from a young age. However, after reading excerpts from Rambunctious Garden by Emma Marris, I became fascinated by the concept of writing. I was still interested in Environmental Studies, but I wanted create change with the information I had attained from my science classes. I was used to composing lab reports, writing essays for religion classes, but the way Marris described nature is a style I had never come across in the scientific world. I admired how Marris used writing as a medium to showcase her passion for the environment.

I had read John Steinbeck’s works such as East Of Eden, which contain beautiful descriptions of Salinas, but Marris’ approach was different. Marris was able use scientific concepts to highlight the beauty of nature which simultaneously educated readers and heightened their admiration for nature. After reading parts of Marris’ work I was further inspired to protect the Earth; writing was used as a vector for change. I realized that I blend my newfound passion for writing with the environment. I had always believed the two to be vastly separate disciplines Rambunctious Garden encouraged me to minor English, yet I have decided to go one step further and major in it. I believe that if mankind wants to save Earth, we as a community, need to start now. As a professional, I aim to advocate that climate change is a real phenomenon, and as a result mankind needs to make efforts to protect the Earth.
